Big IDEAs About Health Data: Using Sex & Gender in Routinely Collected Data

Going beyond the binary: A discussion on the complexities and considerations for using sex and gender in routinely collected data

The principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) are a key component of HDRN Canada’s strategic plan, which outlines our vision of transformative health data use and a future that better supports health equity. This presentation will explore some of the challenges with accurately and meaningfully using sex and gender in routinely collected data. During this session, Morgan Stirling of the University of Manitoba will provide an overview of their work focused on addressing the inclusion and representation of trans and gender diverse people in cancer health services research.

About the Speaker

Morgan Stirling is a queer, nonbinary PhD candidate at the University of Manitoba. They have over 10 years of experience working in the area of health equity and 2SLGBTQ+ people. Prior to their PhD, Morgan worked in Manitoba’s cancer system, where they learned about different structural and systemic issues impacting the ability of trans and gender-diverse people to access safe and respectful care. This led Morgan to their PhD work, where they investigate ways to improve how gender diversity is included and represented in cancer research.

About the Series

The Big IDEAs About Health Data Speaker Series features a variety of experts discussing how data can be used to advance health equity. It aspires to create a space for conversation about whether and how data can be used to advance equity in Canada; specific uses of and guidelines for the use disaggregated data (sex and gender, race and ethnicity, disability, income, housing, language etc.); and advancements in data research practices and methods that embed inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in algorithms, distributed analytics, community involvement and equity assessment tools.

PLEASE NOTE: This presentation is in English. The webinar will be recorded and posted on hdrn.ca.
