A privacy awareness message from your local chapter chair
With Privacy Awareness Week approaching in May, I wanted to comment on your importance as a Health Information Management Professional. As experts in the health information field, our expertise is critical during a pandemic that has moved our traditional privacy standards to become virtual. I hope that you will take the time to learn more about your role in privacy because you are truly an important piece to protecting the privacy of Canada’s health information.
Crystal Kearley, CHIM
The Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (NSPE) chapter committee is a passionate and dedicated team of health information professionals experienced in areas including leadership, data integrity, education, coding and analytics, and more.
Collectively, we developed our professional expertise in settings ranging from tertiary and community hospitals and the provincial trauma registry to cancer care programs, cardiovascular health, and post-secondary education bodies. This wide variety of experience within our committee allows for an inclusive representation of our chapter, as well as the health information profession.
The NSPE chapter is one of eight national chapters within the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA). Our chapter committee is composed of several volunteer members who hold a professional designation from the Canadian College of Health Information Management.
In September 2019, we hosted our first in-person education day in Halifax and experienced an overwhelming response from our wonderful members. We have also provided several online education sessions worth CPE credit, thus contributing to the wealth of shared knowledge accessible by members across the country. None of these efforts would be possible without the help of our subcommittees, which have proven to be invaluable for the planning and execution of all our chapter projects.
We are dedicated to providing new education opportunities and welcome feedback from our chapter members on what they would like to see in that regard. We are committed to engaging NSPE chapter members more to strengthen their relationship with CHIMA and the health information profession.
We are always looking for volunteers to join us and invite any members who may be interested in actively volunteering to reach out. We also welcome any and all suggestions, feedback, and questions that you may have for our chapter. We are very excited to be working on behalf of the NSPE chapter to provide a beneficial network and resource for our members.
