Description of Job:

The Case Costing Specialist is responsible for ensuring the integrity and quality of any data submitted to the Ministry of Health by a healthcare organization. She or he will lead any analyses of healthcare-related financial data, and will serve as the local expert when assessing the impact of any proposed decisions by the Senior Management Team. The Case Costing Specialist will also be required to ensure that the organization is in compliance with all provincial guidelines related to case costing. 

Job Duties: 

  • Ensure the integrity and quality of data submitted to the Ministry and analyze financial data
  • Act as an expert to measure and analyze the impact of proposed decisions by management regarding case costing, including needs analysis and recommendations
  • Oversee adherence to the provincial rules of case costing
  • Ensure ongoing training and supervision of staff who support the activities of collecting financial, statistical, and clinical data related to the case costing as required
  • Lead the implementation of a case costing system
  • Prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain financial computer systems

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or diploma and related coding experience
  • If working with MIS functional centres and other financial data, an Accounting degree (with designation of CPA) and/or Finance degree may be required
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working as a Business Analyst and/or a Case Costing Coordinator
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working with grouping software for RIWs and/or accounting software and/or a financial information system involving complex data
  • Minimum of three years experience working within a hospital environment is preferred
  • Knowledge of CIHI, ICD-10-CA/CCI & CMG+, province specific data collection (e.g., OHRS), Case Costing and OCDM is required
  • Knowledge of HIS, MIS, and electronic financial systems
  • CHIM certification is a requirement for those case costing roles that focus on coded data
