0102 Advancing information governance in Northern Health

A story of a northern rural health region's information governance approach.

Kait Greer, MI, CHIM & Andrea Lorette, CHIM

A story of a northern rural health region’s information governance approach.

Northern Health is a rural health region covering the northern-third of British Columbia and Haida Gwaii. Information and data management is complex and challenging for many reasons, including the vast scope of health services delivery, rugged and remote geographical setting, numerous systems, and varied methods for documentation. Information governance is a growing program with recent success in areas including data governance and privacy & information security.

Kait Greer is a policy coordinator at Northern Health where she supports the development, evaluation, and access to regional policies and clinical practice standards. Enthusiastic about records and information management, Kait achieved a Master of Information from the University of Toronto (2013), Certification in Health Information Management (2018), and is currently completing post-graduate studies with Dalhousie University. In 2020, Kait was appointed chair of CHIMA’s BCYT chapter committee and looks forward to connecting with HIM professionals across BC–Yukon and beyond.

Andrea Lorette graduated from Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Health Information Management program in 1998. She has held a variety of engaging roles with Northern Health since January 2000 and is currently leading the development of an Information and Data Hub program and the region’s Information Governance program. She has volunteered with CHIMA, a provincial HIM association, school district parent advisory councils, and is currently the registrar for a local, minor-hockey association. Andrea has recently completed intermediate quality improvement training and the Change Leadership certificate with CHA Learning.
