An interview exploring a perspective on the current state of health information in Alberta. 

Learn about how Alberta’s health information professionals have overcome challenges unique to their province, how its landscape has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what the immediate and longer term future may hold.

Kathleen is a Certified Health Information Management (CHIM) professional with over 40 years’ experience. In her current role as senior provincial director of health information management (HIM) at Alberta Health Services (AHS), she provides strategic and operational leadership for the provincial HIM service.
Kathleen is a forward thinking innovative change agent whose career has been focused on the identification and implementation of leading practice in HIM. She has led staff and key stakeholders through significant change achieving desired outcomes which includes developing and implementing a single provincial HIM service delivery model and an enterprise information management program. Kathleen is an active member of the AHS Connect Care Governance – care transformation enabled by a provincial clinical information system (CIS).

Cierra graduated from the Westervelt College HIM program in London, Ontario in 2017 with presidential honours and subsequently started her HIM career in coding within northern Alberta communities. In February 2019, Cierra stepped into the role of supervisor of health information management with Bonnyville Health Centre – Covenant Health, where she oversees all operations in health records and registration. She is enjoying the challenge of this leadership position.
Cierra joined the ABNT chapter committee in 2018 and has truly enjoyed her work on the committee so far. She is excited to further this work as chapter chair.
